Class code 9052 — Hotel — All Other Employees & Drivers

Front desk, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, bell, valet and shuttle-driver staff at a hotel or motel.

In states that use the NCCI system, 9052 is the main workers’ comp classification for a hotel or motel. It picks up the people who keep the rooms and the building running: front desk and night audit, housekeeping and laundry, engineering and maintenance, bell staff, and the drivers who run the guest shuttle. If a property has no restaurant of its own, nearly all of its payroll usually lands here apart from clerical office staff.

Housekeeping is the engine of this class’s losses. Room attendants bend, lift mattresses, push loaded carts and scrub tubs dozens of times a shift, so strains, shoulder injuries and slips on wet tile dominate the claim mix. Maintenance staff add ladder falls, lacerations and electrical exposure, and shuttle drivers add the possibility of a vehicle accident, which is why driver hiring standards matter to the underwriter even though the drivers sit in this class.

The code applies to the hotel as an operation, not to a single job title, so classification starts with what the business does. A property that also runs its own restaurant or bar splits that food and beverage payroll out to 9058. Independent-bureau states — California, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Michigan, Texas, Indiana and others — set their own rules and, in some cases, their own code numbers, so confirm the classification your state’s bureau actually uses.

What this code means for your premium

General hotel staff sit in the middle of the rate scale; the property’s own experience modification, housekeeping injury controls and driver standards for any shuttle move the final cost more than the base rate does.

Check your coverage

Classification is not final until a carrier assigns it. Code numbers, wording and exceptions vary by state and rating bureau — several states run their own bureaus. This page is general reference written in our own words; your carrier's underwriter assigns the code based on your actual operations and payroll records.
