Class code 9050 — Hotels, Motels & Short-Term Residential Housing (California)

California's own bureau classification for hotel, motel and short-term residential housing operations.

California does not use the NCCI manual. Its rating bureau publishes its own classification for hotels, motels and short-term residential housing, numbered 9050, and California lodging employers generally report hotel payroll there rather than under the NCCI codes used in most other states.

The California bureau has explained that short-term residential housing in this class means units rented for no more than 30 consecutive days, which is how vacation rentals and timeshare properties can fall within it. It also amended the class in 2021 so that recreation and leisure operations run with a hotel — such as spas, health clubs, golf courses and similar amenities — are classified separately rather than folded into the lodging code.

For a California resort or full-service hotel, that means payroll is often split across several classes: the core lodging staff in 9050, spa and bath staff in their own spa classification, and other leisure operations wherever the bureau places them. Getting that split right at the start avoids an unpleasant audit adjustment later.
