This classification covers ironworkers who erect the structural steel framework of buildings and bridges, including columns, beams, and connections that form the skeleton of a structure. Crews use cranes to hoist steel members into position, then bolt or weld connections while working at height, often before any flooring, decking, or fall protection systems are permanently in place. This work typically happens early in a commercial or industrial building's construction timeline.

Payroll includes connectors who bolt up steel at height, welders who complete permanent connections, and crane signal and rigging personnel who coordinate hoisting.
