Mobile pet groomers work out of specially built-out vans or trailers equipped with water tanks, generators, grooming tables, and drying equipment, and that vehicle is both the business's primary asset and its workplace. A standard commercial auto policy often isn't enough on its own, since the value of the built-in grooming equipment, plumbing, and generator system typically needs to be insured separately from the vehicle chassis itself, similar to how a food truck's equipment is insured apart from the vehicle.
Because the groomer travels to a different driveway or curb for each appointment, driving exposure is a constant part of the workday, and the compact, self-contained nature of a grooming van means a breakdown or accident doesn't just disable a vehicle, it takes the entire business off the road. Water and generator systems on board also introduce their own risk: propane or gas-powered water heaters and generators used in an enclosed van carry fire and carbon monoxide risk that a fixed-location salon simply doesn't have to manage.
Mobile groomers carry the same bailee exposure for pets in their care as salon-based groomers, but with the added complication of working on the client's own property, often unsupervised by the salon at large, which places more responsibility on the individual groomer's judgment and documentation. A pet that's injured, escapes, or is left in an overheated van, even briefly, can create a claim that combines animal care liability with equipment and vehicle exposure all at once.
The water tanks, generators, and grooming equipment built into a mobile van often need separate coverage from the vehicle itself.
Traveling to a new client location for every appointment means driving risk is a continuous part of daily operations.
Propane or gas-powered systems in an enclosed van carry fire and carbon monoxide risk beyond typical vehicle exposure.
Caring for a pet while working alone on a client's property adds documentation and judgment responsibility beyond a salon setting.
