Escape rooms are built around the idea of confinement, which puts fire and building egress code compliance at the center of the venue's risk profile in a way few other entertainment businesses face. Rooms designed to feel locked must still allow rapid emergency exit, and any design choice, prop placement, or staff protocol that could delay evacuation in a real emergency carries outsized consequences given the confined, low-light nature of the spaces.
Participant psychology is also a real operational factor. Some guests experience genuine panic or claustrophobia once immersed in a themed, enclosed room, and a participant who tries to force open a false door, climbs on unstable set pieces, or has a medical or anxiety-related episode can be injured in ways that are difficult to predict in advance. Staff monitoring, whether through cameras or in-room game masters, plays a meaningful role in how quickly these situations are caught and managed.
The physical sets themselves, often built from lightweight or repurposed materials to fit a tight theming budget, need to hold up to guests pulling, pushing, climbing on, and manipulating props as part of the puzzles. A prop or set piece that isn't secured adequately can fall, break, or cause a cut or pinch injury, and because many escape room puzzles intentionally involve locks, latches, and hidden mechanisms, there's a layer of mechanical failure risk layered on top of ordinary premises liability that a standard retail or office space wouldn't carry.
Themed rooms designed to feel locked must still meet emergency exit and fire code requirements to avoid delaying evacuation.
Guests experiencing claustrophobia or panic in an enclosed room can be injured attempting to force exits or interact unsafely with the set.
The confinement element central to the experience creates liability exposure distinct from typical retail or entertainment premises.
Set pieces and props built for theming rather than heavy use can fail under guest interaction, leading to falls or injury.
