Competitive cheer carries one of the more severe catastrophic-injury profiles in youth athletics, largely because of stunting, pyramids, and basket tosses that lift athletes several feet into the air with a small group of teammates responsible for the catch. A missed catch or a poorly executed dismount can result in a concussion, spinal injury, or worse, and this is the exposure liability underwriters focus on most closely. Programs that document spotter and base training, follow sanctioning-body skill progressions for each age level, and require certified coaches for stunting instruction present a materially different risk profile than those that don't.
Dance teams share much of this exposure through lifts, tumbling passes, and partner work, though generally with lower catastrophic-injury frequency than elite-level cheer stunting. Both disciplines commonly rehearse and compete in rented gym or studio space rather than owned facilities, which means the team is usually a guest on someone else's property and liable for its own instruction and supervision within that space — cross-reference the considerations covered in our dance-studios and gymnastics-centers profiles, since many teams share space with those businesses. Facility owners hosting practices or tumbling clinics will almost always require a certificate of insurance before granting access, and our Live Certificate tool is built to generate those on demand.
Competition season adds substantial travel exposure, with teams traveling by bus or car to regional and national competitions, often staying overnight with coaches supervising athletes outside the gym environment. That extended, less-structured supervision raises abuse-prevention considerations that many competitive cheer and dance organizations now address through explicit screening policies and coverage, alongside the physical injury risk inherent in stunting and tumbling.
Missed catches or poor dismounts from stunts and basket tosses carry a real risk of concussion or spinal injury.
Stunting instruction led by uncertified coaches without documented skill progressions increases both injury risk and liability exposure.
Teams practicing and rehearsing in leased facilities are typically responsible for their own instruction and supervision within that space.
Multi-day travel to regional and national competitions puts coaches in extended, less-structured contact with athletes.
