Insurance for Welding Services

Protection designed for the sparks, heat, and heavy equipment behind every weld.

What underwriters look at

Welding work generates intense heat, open flame, and flying sparks, all of which create a serious fire hazard whether the job happens in a shop or on a client's site. Mobile welders in particular often work around combustible materials, fuel lines, or finished construction where a stray spark can ignite far more than the immediate work area.

The physical risks to welders themselves are also significant, from burns and eye damage caused by arc flash to respiratory exposure from metal fumes and long-term joint strain from awkward working positions. Compressed gas cylinders used in the process add explosion risk if mishandled or improperly stored and transported.

Many welders operate mobile rigs stocked with generators, torches, and gas cylinders worth tens of thousands of dollars, making theft and equipment breakdown a real financial exposure. Structural welding also carries completed operations risk, since a failed weld on a support beam or pipeline connection may not reveal itself until well after the job is finished.

Fire and spark-related damage

Welding sparks can ignite nearby combustible materials, causing fire damage that extends well beyond the immediate work area.

Burns and arc flash injuries

Welders face constant exposure to burns, arc flash eye injuries, and fume inhalation while performing routine work.

Compressed gas cylinder hazards

Improperly stored or transported gas cylinders can leak or rupture, creating explosion and injury risk.

Structural weld failure claims

A failed weld on a support structure or pipeline connection may not be discovered until well after the job is complete, triggering a liability claim.

What it typically costs

Welding insurance premiums depend heavily on whether work is shop-based or mobile, and whether jobs involve structural or industrial applications.

Business sizeTypical annual range

Solo mobile welder

Typically covers GL and workers' comp for repair and fabrication work performed at client sites.

$2,200 – $5,500 / yr

3–10 employees / shop-based

Reflects fixed-location fire risk along with payroll-driven workers' comp costs.

$8,000 – $20,000 / yr

10+ employees / structural or industrial

Structural and industrial welding contracts typically require higher liability and umbrella limits.

$25,000 – $70,000+ / yr
